Has anything changed in Special Education since my child was there?

That's the "Big" question! Has much changed over the years in the education of children with disabilities? I don't think, so. Maybe a little, with children that don't have significant disabilities. But for children with severe disabilities, I think the school system is still a daycare for them. Is transition being done at an early age? NO!! Parents of these children have no clue what is going to happen to their child when they get out of school. Transition doesn't even begin for them until their last year of school. A little late, you think. Parents need to realize that transition for their child is a life time affair. It is never too early to begin transition. Is there supported employment for these children? No! Only for the ones that are higher functioning.

You, as parents (and teachers), have to advocate for your child early on in their lives. Stand up for their rights for the Best education they can get. Don't rely on the school system to tell you what is best, do your homework and research what is out there for your child. It is up to you and only you, to get the best for your child.

Tell me what you think about the Special Education in your school system. I would like to hear from parents and teachers.
